Professor Okey Ikechukwu, Executive Director of Development Specs Academy, has stated that the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria acted appropriately by addressing insecurity and economic challenges during their meeting with President Bola Tinubu. Appearing on Channels Television, he described their feedback as a vital component of a healthy democratic process.
Ikechukwu emphasized that while the administration has the right to reply, it must prioritize rebuilding public trust. Regarding the 2027 elections, he warned against placing too much faith in electoral reforms alone, stating that success requires robust institutions and strict enforcement of legal standards rather than mere technological updates.
The professor also challenged the notion that any tactic is acceptable in politics, asserting that governance must remain grounded in ethics and accountability. He noted that the administration’s economic reforms have yet to yield positive results for the average citizen, who continues to struggle with high inflation and safety concerns.
Furthermore, he suggested that INEC should take a firmer role in verifying candidate credentials to resolve public doubt. Ikechukwu concluded by urging voters to reject the culture of vote-buying, emphasizing that citizens must hold elected officials accountable to ensure a functioning democracy.
