Abia State authorities detain man for using realistic lighter to commit robberies

Abia police have captured a 22-year-old suspect who used a pistol-shaped lighter to intimidate victims and commit robberies.

Abia State Police have taken a 22-year-old into custody for allegedly using a pistol-shaped lighter to threaten and rob people. The individual, known as Chidera and hailing from Isiochi in Umunneochi Local Government Area, was apprehended by the Isuochi Divisional Police team after officers received reliable information.

Police spokesperson DSP Maureen Chinaka explained that the suspect utilized the fake firearm to deceive victims into believing he was dangerous, which allowed him to seize their personal property. The arrest took place on July 5, and authorities seized several items connected to his reported crimes.

Chinaka stated that the suspect frequently targeted residents by exploiting the realistic appearance of the metal lighter to trigger fear. Officials are currently probing the scope of his actions and checking for potential partners in crime. Once the inquiry finishes, the man will face formal charges in court.

This operation is part of the command’s broader campaign to curb violent street crime. The police have asked citizens to stay alert and notify them of any suspicious behavior, promising a continued dedication to public safety and property protection.
