Abia legislator pushes for local fire station following gas station blaze

Abia State lawmaker Anderson Akaliro is demanding a new fire station in Ohuhu following a destructive fuel station fire, as the state government also commits to building a new facility at Abia State University.

Anderson Akaliro, the representative for Umuahia North in the Abia State House of Assembly, has urged the state government to set up a dedicated fire service post in the Ohuhu region. This request comes after a fuel tanker exploded at a petrol station in Nkwoegwu, Ohuhu, during an offloading operation, causing significant destruction.

During a session focused on urgent matters, Akaliro explained that the rise in both population and business activity in the area makes a local emergency station vital. While he commended the state fire service for preventing the flames from spreading to nearby structures, he emphasized the need for better equipment, emergency vehicles, and additional staff to improve safety.

The State House of Assembly backed the motion, recognizing the need to bolster emergency services throughout the region. Meanwhile, the state government has announced a separate initiative to build a fire station at Abia State University in Uturu. Chukwunenye Alajemba, the Governor’s aide on fire and security matters, confirmed this plan during a meeting with Vice Chancellor Professor Ndukwe Okeudo to ensure the campus remains protected.
