Abass Mimiko, the former governorship candidate for the Zenith Labour Party in Ondo State, has stated that recent criticisms directed at First Lady Oluremi Tinubu regarding her suggestions on small-scale commerce are politically motivated. During a session with journalists in Akure, Mimiko argued that opponents are intentionally distorting her comments about engaging in petty trading to gain an advantage against President Bola Tinubu.
Mimiko, who is the younger brother of former Governor Olusegun Mimiko, characterized the outrage as a manufactured controversy intended to undermine the administration. He suggested that the pushback is a reaction to the President’s ongoing economic reforms, such as the removal of fuel subsidies and changes to oil revenue management, which have challenged established interests.
Addressing the role of the First Lady, he emphasized that her primary responsibility is to support her husband and maintain the stability of their home. He praised her contributions through the Renewed Hope Initiative, noting her efforts in areas like healthcare, widow support, and women’s empowerment, arguing that these positive actions deserve greater recognition than the current manufactured debate.
