A coalition of approximately 300 civil society groups, spearheaded by the Gender for Social Justice and Good Governance (GFSJGG), has officially revoked its plans for nationwide protests regarding the passing of Mary Habila. The decision followed a comprehensive fact-finding mission that cleared Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, of involvement in the matter.
Originally slated for July 23 and 24, the demonstrations were canceled after new information surfaced. Dr. Jumoke Adebiyi and Comrade Amina Danjuma, representing the coalition, stated that their investigation involved site visits to Uburu in Ebonyi State, medical consultations, and extensive stakeholder interviews.
The inquiry indicated that the deceased suffered from pre-existing health complications that likely played a role in her death. Furthermore, the coalition noted that Minister Umahi had been a vocal proponent for a formal autopsy. Emphasizing the importance of due process, the group asserted that the presumption of innocence is a fundamental right that must be respected for all citizens.
The coalition urged the public to avoid trial by media and requested that security agencies complete their ongoing investigations without external pressure. They also called for an end to political exploitation of the tragedy, asking all parties to respect the privacy and grief of the Habila family while the judicial process proceeds.
