Strange Disease Claims Lives of Five University Students in Kebbi
The registrar of Kebbi State University of Science and Technology, Aliero (KSUSTA), Maimaru Alhaji Tilli, confirmed that, according to university records, four students had passed away.
Some students, speaking anonymously to Channels Television, reported that four students mysteriously died last week, while another succumbed on Sunday, March 16, after falling ill overnight.
A source mentioned that officials from the World Health Organization (WHO) had visited the university last week to raise awareness about the dangers of meningitis. However, they did not confirm whether meningitis was the cause of the deaths of the two students who passed away before their visit.
“Yes, four students have d!ed according to our records, but we do not yet know the cause. The Ministry of Health has cautioned us, and they have advised that there is a need to decongest students’ accommodation,” he stated.
Tilli further stated that he had formally written to the Commissioner for Higher Education, Isah Abubakar Tunga, requesting guidance on measures to prevent more fatalities.
A student leader also confirmed the deaths and disclosed that the Students’ Union Government (SUG) had petitioned the university management, urging them to temporarily shut down the institution to avoid further casualties.
