The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) is asking transportation unions to work more closely with the agency to enhance traffic movement and safety. This appeal was issued during an educational outreach session held in Ikeja, which brought together union leaders and various stakeholders.
As part of a new strategy combining enforcement with public awareness, officials spoke to transport workers about the necessity of following traffic laws. Drivers were specifically urged to stop parking in prohibited areas, making illegal U-turns, and picking up passengers in unauthorized spots. LASTMA emphasized that transport operators have a shared duty to ensure orderly and safe road use.
During the session, union leaders discussed operational obstacles their members face, while LASTMA staff clarified regulatory procedures. General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki stated that sustainable traffic improvements require more than just strict enforcement; they rely on constant communication and partnership.
Bakare-Oki highlighted the influence unions hold over their members, encouraging them to prioritize internal training on traffic discipline. He explained that the ultimate goal is to foster voluntary compliance, as the behavior of commercial drivers significantly impacts the daily commute of all Lagos residents. The agency concluded by reminding everyone that traffic regulations exist to save lives and facilitate efficient travel.
