Simon Levy, a 40-year-old from Tottenham, has been handed a whole life prison sentence for the murders of Carmenza Valencia-Trujillo and Sheryl Wilkins. The judge at the Old Bailey confirmed that Levy will never be eligible for release, noting his history of sexual violence and predatory behavior. The court heard that Levy committed these killings while being monitored by the police, sparking widespread criticism regarding systemic failures in the justice system.
Levy was found guilty of murdering 53-year-old Valencia-Trujillo and 39-year-old Wilkins in separate attacks involving sexual motives. During the trial, evidence revealed that Levy had an obsession with sexual violence. Judge Mark Lucraft KC described the crimes as ruthless, emphasizing that the aggravating factors in this case necessitated a whole life order rather than a standard term.
The sentencing follows significant backlash against the Metropolitan Police and the Crown Prosecution Service. Although police repeatedly requested that Levy be remanded in custody due to his history of assaults, he was granted bail multiple times, allowing him to continue his attacks. Met Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley acknowledged that the handling of the case was a complete system failure, stating it was unacceptable that dangerous individuals remain free while awaiting trial.
Victims’ families expressed deep anger and pain during the proceedings. Lindsey Hicks, sister of Sheryl Wilkins, condemned Levy for destroying her family and taking away her sibling’s future. The case has prompted calls for a multi-agency review, with London Mayor Sadiq Khan and various political figures demanding accountability for the missed opportunities to intervene and protect these women from a known predator.
