Ali Ndume, the Senator representing Borno South, has requested that President Bola Tinubu facilitate the direct disbursement of salary increases to the Nigerian military. This appeal follows the recent approval of pay raises for approximately 250,000 service members.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Ndume highlighted that the wage hike, combined with the expansion of military divisions from eight to 12, indicates that the President is serious about combating national security threats. The former Senate Committee on Army Chairman praised the move as a sign of responsive leadership, noting that improved compensation will serve as a vital incentive for soldiers.
Despite supporting the pay increase, Ndume cautioned that financial incentives alone are insufficient to defeat insurgency. He urged the administration to prioritize the consistent and timely delivery of weapons, ammunition, and necessary logistics to ensure the military remains fully equipped to handle terrorism and banditry.
