Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has pledged to foster an inclusive environment for individuals with albinism, promising that his administration will actively prevent discrimination and integrate them into official government initiatives. This commitment was voiced by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr. Seun Osamaye, during the 2026 International Albinism Awareness Day held in Akure.
To mark the event, organized by the Ministry in partnership with the State Agency for the Welfare of Persons with Disabilities, authorities distributed 360 tubes of sunscreen, 360 units of sunblock, and financial grants to help mitigate health risks for those with the condition. Dr. Osamaye emphasized that the state is working to remove social barriers and ensure that persons with disabilities receive fair representation in government.
Under the theme ‘Proudly My Skin: Celebrating All Skin Tones,’ officials clarified that albinism is a hereditary genetic condition rather than a disease or curse. They urged the public to offer respect and dignity to those with albinism, noting that they often face unfair biases regarding their competence in academic and professional settings.
Ayodele Fagorola, who leads the state chapter of the Association of Persons with Albinism, lauded the governor’s initiatives but noted that social exclusion and acceptance remain significant hurdles. He urged the government to pursue sustained policies to address stigma, which he argued hinders the potential contributions of his members. The event concluded with further praise from Folashade Arise, the head of the State Agency for the Welfare of Persons with Disabilities, who highlighted the support provided by the Governor and First Lady Mrs. Oluwaseun Aiyedatiwa in championing inclusivity.
