Ibn Mohammed bin Shekau, the son of the deceased Boko Haram commander Abubakar Shekau, has allegedly surfaced as a member of the insurgent organization. This claim was shared online by Zagazola Makama, a specialist in counter-terrorism.
This development has sparked anxiety regarding the potential survival of the networks and extremist beliefs established by his father. According to Zagazola, the younger Shekau is mirroring the trajectory of his parent, who was a central figure in the North-East Nigerian conflict.
Abubakar Shekau assumed command of the group following the demise of founder Mohammed Yusuf, overseeing a particularly brutal chapter of the insurgency. His tenure involved repeated strikes against civilian populations, government facilities, and security forces throughout the region and adjacent nations. He was recognized for a rigid approach to leadership and the frequent distribution of videos designed to intimidate officials.
Zagazola observed that Shekau’s passing in 2021, which resulted from a clash with Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) militants, fundamentally shifted the nature of the violence near Lake Chad.
