Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress in the upcoming 2027 election, has argued that true leadership is defined by the tangible effects it has on the lives of citizens. Speaking at an empowerment event held by Professor Lilian Orogbu, the representative for Awka North and South Federal Constituency, Obi praised her commitment to meaningful public service.
During the ceremony, Orogbu distributed various assets to over 500 constituents, including vehicles, sewing equipment, freezers, and power generators. She also provided scholarships to students to promote educational access. Obi remarked that such programs are essential for alleviating poverty and tackling broad societal issues. He highlighted deep-seated concerns regarding unemployment, educational shortcomings, and national insecurity, linking these problems to inefficient governance and resource mismanagement.
Obi reiterated that Nigeria needs accountable and capable leaders to move past economic hardship and insecurity, while also calling on citizens to prioritize fairness and integrity during the 2027 elections. Orogbu explained that the event was a gesture of appreciation for those who assisted in her 2023 campaign, noting that she plans to host a second phase in November 2026. She encouraged beneficiaries to use the provided tools to build sustainable livelihoods.
Local officials, including NDC Anambra Chairman Ikem Uzoezie and Senator Victor Umeh, lauded Orogbu for keeping her campaign promises. Senator Umeh highlighted her legislative performance and constituency projects, advocating for her reelection to help her become a ranking member capable of securing further development for the region.
