Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has firmly rejected the possibility of striker Julian Alvarez departing the club this summer, despite persistent transfer interest from Barcelona. Addressing media in Seoul ahead of a friendly against Manchester City, Simeone stressed that the club is determined to retain the Argentine forward. This follows a previous FIFA complaint filed by Atletico against Barcelona regarding illegal approach tactics.
CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin echoed this stance, stating that the club rejected a 150-million-euro bid from Real Madrid in June and remains uninterested in any future offers. Since joining from Manchester City two years ago, the 26-year-old has recorded 49 goals for the team. Gil Marin emphasized that the organization views the player as their primary striker and a vital component of their future.
Regarding the potential for fan backlash, Simeone referenced the career of Antoine Griezmann, who regained supporter trust after returning from a stint at Barcelona. He insisted that the focus should remain on sporting achievements and supporting Alvarez through his development. The team prepares for their La Liga opener against Malaga on August 19, aiming to improve upon last season’s fourth-place finish.
