President Bola Tinubu has instructed the newly formed leadership of the World Energy Council (WEC) Nigeria to establish the nation as a prominent figure in international energy matters. The goal is to ensure that African viewpoints influence global policy decisions. This mandate follows Nigeria’s formal induction as a National Member Committee of the WEC, a milestone the President views as an endorsement of the nation’s energy reforms.
In a statement released by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Tinubu emphasized that joining this network of over 100 countries allows Nigeria to influence crucial discussions on energy security, equity, and sustainability. He stressed that Nigeria’s involvement is intended to lead rather than merely participate.
The newly appointed board, chaired by Abdulrazaq Isa with Bala Wunti serving as CEO, aims to improve domestic policy engagement and secure international investment. The platform functions as an independent, neutral forum for government, industry, and academic stakeholders to address the national Energy Trilemma. By tapping into a global network of over 3,000 organizations, the council seeks to facilitate technology transfer and economic growth.
Tinubu commended the inaugural board members for their diverse expertise, highlighting the contributions of Isa in indigenous refining and Wunti in long-term sector reform. The President pledged full government support for the initiative, affirming the country’s dedication to providing affordable, secure, and sustainable energy through collaboration with the WEC London office.
