Lise Klaveness, the leader of the Norwegian Football Federation (NFF), announced on Friday that the organization is officially calling for the resignation of FIFA president Gianni Infantino. Having been a vocal opponent of his leadership for years, the NFF concluded after a meeting of its governing bodies that Infantino no longer possesses the necessary institutional trust to guide FIFA effectively.
Klaveness emphasized that there is no path forward for the current president, declaring that the federation intends to press for his immediate departure. This demand comes as Infantino prepares to run for a final term in next March’s election. Having served as president since 2016, he remains the only announced candidate for the position and requires a majority of votes from the 211 member nations to continue.
The pressure on the Italian-Swiss attorney has intensified recently following the collapse of a controversial proposal to invite private equity investment into FIFA’s flagship tournaments, most notably the World Cup.
