Adeniyi Adeyemi, the Director General of the disputed Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council, states that he is being detained by the police without legal justification. His legal counsel, Prince Ademola Oyedokun, issued a statement urging the House of Representatives to hold a public hearing instead of a private session to address the ongoing situation.
Oyedokun affirmed that his client supports the legislative probe into the organization, noting that the National Assembly possesses the constitutional authority to investigate the matter. The attorney clarified that Adeyemi has never refused to testify, but remains in police custody despite the committee’s inability to question him.
Addressing the police claims, the defense team argued that the bench warrant used for the arrest only permitted the police to bring Adeyemi before the Federal High Court. They contend that the warrant did not authorize detention, and since the police failed to present him to a judge, his current confinement lacks a valid court order. An application for his release is currently pending in court. Furthermore, the defense insists that because the accusations were made publicly, the subsequent investigation must occur in an open forum.
