One Dead, 15 Arrested Trying to Enter Canada from the US

Canadian police announced on Wednesday, February 5, that one person had died, and 15 others were arrested attempting to enter Canada from the United States in three separate incidents over the past few weeks.

Authorities also emphasized ongoing efforts to secure the border, in light of US President Donald Trump’s calls for a more stringent crackdown on illegal crossings.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police Assistant Commissioner Lisa Moreland stated that the individuals involved in the incidents were of various nationalities and were unprepared for the extremely cold Canadian winter conditions. No fentanyl was found, and their identities were not disclosed due to privacy laws.

The incidents occurred shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump suspended his threat of imposing steep tariffs on Canada and Mexico on February 3.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau secured the suspension following discussions with Trump about border security, including efforts to deploy new technology and personnel.

They also talked about cooperating to fight organized crime, fentanyl smuggling, and money laundering.

Moreland showcased thermal imagery and aerial footage to demonstrate that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police has the technology and resources in place to secure the border.

In the latest incident, a U.S. citizen drove into Canada from the Coutts port of entry, connecting Montana and Alberta, and tried to flee when stopped for inspection. The man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound while being pursued by police.

Earlier, on February 2, police apprehended four adults and five youths near Coutts, following a tip-off from U.S. border patrol agents. Another incident occurred on January 14, when six people were arrested after crossing into Manitoba, enduring harsh temperatures of -20 to -30°C (-4°F to -22°F).
