The Ivorian football federation confirmed on Tuesday that Herve Renard has resumed his role as head coach of the national team. The 57-year-old French manager previously guided the squad to victory in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
Renard succeeds Emerse Fae, who was dismissed despite successfully coaching The Elephants to the 2024 AFCON championship. Under Fae, the team reached the knockout phase of the World Cup earlier this year, ultimately falling 2-1 to Norway.
Renard brings extensive experience to the position, having previously secured a 2012 Africa Cup of Nations win with Zambia. His coaching career includes tenures with national squads in Morocco, Ghana, and Angola. He also managed Saudi Arabia, famously defeating Argentina during the 2022 World Cup.
The coach’s immediate objective is the team’s first qualifier for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations against Ghana in September. That tournament will be held in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
