Renowned DR Congo Superfan Lumumba Vea Debuts at 2026 World Cup

Michel Kuka Mboladinga, the iconic DR Congo fan known as Lumumba Vea, has joined the 2026 World Cup after finishing a quarantine period, though his presence could not prevent a 1-0 loss to Colombia.

Michel Kuka Mboladinga, the DR Congo supporter widely recognized as “Lumumba Vea,” finally made his presence known at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He attended the Leopards’ match against Colombia following a mandatory 21-day quarantine related to Ebola outbreaks in his nation, which caused him to miss the team’s opening draw against Portugal.

Mboladinga is well-known for his distinct performance art where he mimics the posture of Patrice Lumumba, the first prime minister of the DR Congo. He stands completely still with his right arm lifted during the games, a gesture he describes as a symbol of peace for his country. Having gained fame during the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, he received an enthusiastic greeting from spectators at Estadio Akron in Guadalajara.

Before settling into his silent stance, Mboladinga interacted with both Colombian and Congolese fans. Despite his return, the DR Congo squad could not secure a victory, falling 1-0 to Colombia after a late, deflected goal by Daniel Muñoz.
