A collective of Christian and human rights advocates, organized as the Christian Youth Alliance of Nigeria (CYAN), has formally requested the intervention of President Donald Trump and the United States Congress regarding the anticipated repetition of a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket in Nigeria’s 2027 elections. The group warns that this political strategy jeopardizes the safety of Christians, especially those residing in the Northern region.
In a document released in Jos, the coalition highlights concerns that President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima maintaining this ticket could widen the religious divide and marginalize segments of the population. They argue that this approach breaks from the historical precedent of balancing high-level political offices between the nation’s two primary religions.
Furthermore, the organization objects to the government’s practice of rehabilitating former terrorists, advocating instead for their legal prosecution. They have requested that the United States keep Nigeria on its list of Countries of Particular Concern until there is tangible proof that Christian communities are better protected. The group also called for inquiries into recent attacks in Plateau and Benue states, better aid for displaced victims, and an investigation into potential foreign influence from Arab nations on Nigeria’s political landscape.
