LaLiga president Javier Tebas has publicly demanded that Gianni Infantino step down from his position as FIFA president. This demand follows the collapse of a controversial initiative that sought to sell a portion of the World Cup to private equity interests.
In a social media statement shared over the weekend, Tebas asserted that Infantino’s departure is necessary. While he acknowledged that the cancellation of the privatization scheme was a positive development, he insisted that the underlying issues regarding FIFA’s governance remain unaddressed. Tebas urged football stakeholders, including leagues, players, and associations, to remain vigilant rather than viewing the matter as resolved.
Infantino confirmed on Saturday that the project, which would have granted private investors control over commercial rights and tournament management, has been scrapped. The reversal occurred after UEFA threatened to boycott FIFA competitions. Furthermore, the lack of sufficient support from other football confederations left the proposal without a path to approval.
