Lorena Wiebes, a former European champion, has solidified her reputation as the peloton’s premier sprinter by clinching stage two of the Tour de France Femmes. This win marks her second consecutive stage victory, allowing her to extend her lead in the general classification.
The 27-year-old Team SD Worx-Protime rider surged ahead with 250 metres remaining, securing the win by a clear margin. Her performance followed a 147.9km route from Aigle to Geneva, Switzerland. The race intensity peaked in the final kilometre, as the field successfully reeled in breakaway rider Riejanne Markus of Lidl-Trek.
Reflecting on the achievement, Wiebes noted the challenge of maintaining the yellow jersey while balancing the inherent risks of high-speed sprints. This victory marks her seventh stage win at the Tour de France Femmes since the event was reintegrated into the World Tour schedule in 2022.
Elisa Balsamo of Italy claimed second place, followed by Dutch veteran Marianne Vos in third. The 2026 edition of the race spans nine stages, with a notable upcoming feature being the inaugural ascent of Mont Ventoux on stage seven. While stage three presents a difficult climb near Geneva, the subsequent flat section may provide Wiebes’ team another chance to organize a tactical chase.
