The Lagos State Police Command has launched an official inquiry into claims of police brutality after a video surfaced online. An X user, @ChuksEricE, posted footage depicting a gold seller who alleged that officers in the Festac area attacked him.
The merchant explained that he was transporting a necklace when law enforcement stopped him for a search. Despite finding no illegal items, the officers reportedly seized his gold-weighing scale, falsely claiming it was meant for weighing cannabis. When the man refused to go to the station because he had committed no crime, the officers allegedly attempted to abduct him using an unmarked bus.
According to the victim, he was struck in the head with a firearm and subjected to a physical beating. The Lagos Police Command responded via their official X account on Saturday, confirming that they identified the officers as members of the Area E Command. Commissioner of Police Fatai Tijani has ordered the Area Commander to present the involved officers for disciplinary questioning. The police have asked the victim to reach out to the Complaint Response Unit to support the ongoing investigation, promising that those responsible will face legal consequences.
