Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, recently argued that Africa possesses significant wealth and should not rely on international aid for development. Speaking at a ceremony for Ahunna Eziakonwa, the newly appointed Senior Adviser on Africa to the UN Secretary-General, Ibrahim challenged the stereotype of Africa as a dependent region.
Highlighting that Africa represents a quarter of the global population, Ibrahim stated that the continent’s future is vital. He rejected the concept of aid in favor of trade, partnership, and cooperation. He specifically praised former U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade-focused initiatives as a model for preserving national sovereignty. Despite this, participation from African nations in such trade programs remains limited, with only six countries signed on.
Ibrahim also voiced frustration regarding the UN Security Council structure, noting that Africa lacks a permanent seat despite its population size and global influence. He suggested this exclusion might contribute to regional insecurity. He urged Eziakonwa to advocate for Africa’s rightful position on the council.
During the event, Eziakonwa expressed deep gratitude to Nigeria for her upbringing and career foundations. The ceremony also featured recognition for UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, highlighting the pride Nigerians feel regarding her leadership role on the world stage.
