A group of 12 journalists traveling to an event hosted by Peoples Democratic Party member Ifeanyi Nworie were assaulted by suspected political thugs in Idembia, Ezza South, Ebonyi State. The media team was commuting in a marked Nigeria Union of Journalists vehicle when they were intercepted by individuals allegedly affiliated with the All Progressives Congress.
The assailants, reportedly directed by a lawyer named Friday Agbom, struck the vehicle repeatedly and attempted to ignite it. The driver successfully evaded the attackers, preventing further harm to the occupants. Observers noted over 50 individuals wearing shirts featuring an APC lawmaker’s image blockading the road to the event.
The group had previously disrupted the initial venue of the gathering, prompting a relocation to Nworie’s private residence. During the violence, a bystander was beaten and forced into a nearby bush. Despite the presence of approximately 20 police officers nearby at the original venue, the blockade and assaults persisted.
