The Christian Elders and Professionals Consultative Council of Nigeria (CEPCCN) has formally asked the Federal Government to interpret recent feedback from the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria as genuine advice meant to improve governance rather than as political resistance. The council emphasized that such interactions are vital for maintaining peace and ensuring sustainable development across the country.
Led by Bishop Justice Alpha Ikpeama, the group released a statement titled, A Respectful Appeal for Constructive Engagement Between Government and the Church. The document argues that religious leaders have a duty to highlight national concerns. According to the council, these contributions fall under protected constitutional rights and serve as a form of civic participation.
The CEPCCN noted that historically, the Church has been instrumental in building the nation through health services, education, and humanitarian efforts. They advised the current administration to view feedback as a chance to refine policies and restore public trust. Furthermore, the council reminded both government officials and religious figures that national interest should remain the primary focus, especially with the 2027 elections approaching.
Concluding their statement, the elders called for a shift toward transparent dialogue. They urged authorities to address pressing issues like rising inflation, insecurity, and unemployment, while encouraging a climate of mutual respect to foster a stable and prosperous Nigeria.
