A coalition of civil society groups known as The Osun Masterminds (TOM) has voiced apprehension regarding the apparent misuse of state authority against political opponents as the August 15 gubernatorial election approaches. Prof. Wasiu Oyedokun-Alli, the group’s Executive Director, has formally requested that security agencies exercise caution, citing reports of intimidation directed at activists and opposition members.
According to the coalition, there is a troubling pattern of politically motivated arrests and selective law enforcement. These actions allegedly target media commentators, activists, and those who voice dissent. Oyedokun-Alli noted that several individuals have faced detention without timely court appearances simply for sharing political opinions online or engaging in peaceful activities. He emphasized that these actions contradict the rights protected by the 1999 Constitution.
The group has called upon the Nigeria Police Force and the Osun State Command to maintain impartiality, noting that public funds are intended for the protection of all citizens rather than the settlement of political disputes. Additionally, the organization addressed the growing trend of traditional rulers involving themselves in partisan politics. They reminded royal fathers that their position is one of cultural leadership that requires neutrality. The coalition urged both political actors and leaders to shield the traditional institution from political influence to ensure peace and fairness throughout the electoral process.
