The Lagos State Police Command has launched a formal investigation into a video circulating online that depicts the alleged mistreatment of a gold dealer by police personnel in Festac. The incident reportedly transpired on Friday and drew public concern after the trader posted recordings explaining he was attacked while delivering jewelry to a client.
The police confirmed through their official X account that the officers involved serve under the Area E Command. The victim stated in the footage that he was stopped and searched without cause, noting that officers mistook his gold-weighing scale for drug paraphernalia. He refused to go to the station because the officers lacked proper uniforms and their vehicle was unmarked, which he found suspicious.
The trader claims the encounter turned violent when officers attempted to force him into the vehicle, resulting in a head injury from a firearm and physical abuse. Further video evidence displays the man with an eye injury. He also alleged that an officer ordered his team to shoot before they ultimately left the area. Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, has ordered the Area Commander to present the identified officers at the state headquarters for questioning and disciplinary review.
