He stepped down in April 2022 following a difficult series against the West Indies.
During his previous term, the pressures of the role negatively impacted his well-being, leading him to describe the experience as an unhealthy relationship. However, since relinquishing the captaincy, his batting performance has flourished, with an average exceeding 54. Root, 35, stated that the offer from incoming head coach Stephen Fleming was a primary reason for his return, noting that their shared vision sparked his immediate enthusiasm.
The duo faces a challenging task as they take over a team that struggled with recent series losses and off-field controversies following the departure of Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum. Root intends to build upon the positive shifts in team mentality established during the previous era while incorporating a more strategic approach to match situations. He will lead the team for the first time in his new tenure against Pakistan at Headingley on August 19.
