An early morning blaze has destroyed five buildings in the Bomadi-Overside business district of Delta State, resulting in one fatality and extensive property damage. The fire broke out between 4:25 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. on the former Our Saviour’s Hospital Street, a key location for local merchants and riverine traders.
The victim was identified as J.T. Christopher, who perished in the flames. Survivors described a desperate scene, as residents attempted to flee the rapidly spreading inferno. Mrs. Esther Thomas, a resident, noted that the fire escalated quickly, forcing her to abandon her belongings to escape. Efforts by local community members to douse the flames using water from the nearby river proved unsuccessful due to the sheer intensity of the blaze, which consumed a 12-room apartment and nearby structures.
Local figures, including Mr. Kurō-asain Tamaraukuro and Mr. Doutimiariye Ndakwe, have appealed to Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the chairman of Bomadi Local Government Council, Hon. Dagidi Andaye, to provide emergency support for those displaced. The community is seeking urgent assistance for the survivors who have lost their entire livelihoods and support for the family of the deceased.
