The Independent National Electoral Commission has declined the nomination of former President Goodluck Jonathan for the upcoming 2027 polls. The proposal was put forward by the Taminu Turaki wing of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Reports indicate that this faction had previously attempted to file the nomination of Jonathan alongside various legislative and gubernatorial hopefuls. Because they claimed they were blocked from using the official electronic portal, the group opted to deliver their documents manually.
Victoria Eta-Messi, the commission’s Director of Voter Education and Publicity, rejected the validity of this physical delivery. She clarified that electoral protocols mandate that all candidate submissions must be processed via the official online platform. The commission maintains that manual filings do not align with current regulations.
This decision by the electoral body invalidates the filing from the Turaki faction, casting significant doubt on the standing of the candidates proposed by that group.
