Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has emphasized that the upcoming Osun governorship election serves as a vital indicator for the commission’s readiness ahead of the 2027 general elections. During a visit to the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji Olanipekun, on Friday, he highlighted the state’s role as a critical testing ground in the national electoral schedule.
Amupitan stressed that INEC is prioritizing a credible, peaceful, and transparent process for the August 15 election. To boost voter turnout, the commission has extended the collection period for Permanent Voter Cards and launched online registration platforms. He reiterated that ensuring the safety of voters and staff remains a top priority, noting that no political outcome justifies violence.
In response to fears regarding political friction, the chairman confirmed that INEC is collaborating with the Nigeria Police Force to guarantee a secure environment. He urged the monarch to use his platform to encourage peaceful conduct among political stakeholders, emphasizing that intimidation serves only to hinder the democratic process.
Oba Jimoh Oyetunji welcomed the delegation and expressed his support for a fair electoral process, while Retired Justice Moshood Adekunle Adeigbe pledged the community’s commitment to fostering dialogue and preventing unrest. The commission remains focused on efficient logistics and accurate result management to maintain the integrity of the polls.
