Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has cautioned young people against being exploited for political violence, emphasizing that political goals should never cost a life. He issued this message during the 2026 International Youth Week in Abakaliki, an event hosted by the Ebonyi State branch of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN).
Representing the governor, Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports Chidi Onyia highlighted that the state views its youth as its most valuable resource. He encouraged them to prioritize education, vocational skills, and entrepreneurship to prepare for future leadership roles. He specifically warned against the misuse of social media for propaganda, urging youth to use digital tools to support community development instead.
Nwifuru further recommended that the youth focus on personal development rather than relying on political handouts, noting that building sustainable skills is vital for economic and civic relevance. NYCN Ebonyi Chairman Douglas Ochishi also addressed the assembly, urging his peers to steer clear of illicit activities like cultism and drug abuse in favor of innovation and responsible citizenship. Additional government officials echoed these sentiments, stressing the need for long-term investments in youth education and leadership training.
