Sam Amadi, who heads the Abuja School of Social and Political Thought, argued that the decision by musician Davido to contact United States President Donald Trump regarding the Osun State gubernatorial election signifies a profound erosion of confidence in Nigeria’s federal bodies.
Speaking during a broadcast on Arise Television this Wednesday, Amadi addressed the situation following widespread allegations of rigging and potential violence surrounding the poll scheduled for August 15, 2026. Davido, the nephew of current Governor Ademola Adeleke, sought international attention from the U.S. leader, citing his fears about voter intimidation and threats to democratic stability.
Amadi noted that while seeking foreign intervention in a domestic election is unfortunate, it is somewhat understandable given the perceived incompetence of local institutions. He suggested that the desperation behind such a move stems from a widespread belief that government agencies have failed to maintain impartiality, especially as the nation looks toward the 2027 electoral cycle.
