The Ondo State chapter of the Young Advocates for Good Governance (YAGG) has called on President Bola Tinubu to redirect his attention toward urgent national concerns rather than scrutinizing state-level flyover projects. The organization specifically targeted the 700-kilometer Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, labeling the initiative a misuse of public resources given the nation’s broader infrastructure gaps.
According to YAGG, presidential aides should discourage the President from supporting such costly endeavors. The group countered the President’s critique of state-funded flyovers by suggesting he should first evaluate his own administration’s policies, which they claim often prioritize political interests over genuine development. They further alleged that federal funds have been diverted to weaken political opponents at the state level, an action they deem wasteful.
In contrast, the group praised Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for initiating the 2.3-kilometer Oba-Adesida Flyover in Akure, noting its potential to alleviate traffic and stimulate local economic growth. YAGG questioned the federal government’s fiscal priorities, noting that the estimated 15 trillion naira cost for the coastal highway could be better used to repair existing, dilapidated federal roads across the country.
The group also raised concerns regarding transparency, pointing out the absence of competitive bidding for the contract awarded to HITECH Construction Company Limited. They emphasized that in a period of economic instability, the government should focus on projects that provide immediate value to the public rather than pursuing initiatives of questionable economic merit.
