Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated that achieving lasting security in the South-East is a prerequisite for Nigeria’s economic growth and national unity. He made these comments on Thursday while attending the 2026 South-East Regional Security Summit in Umuahia, Abia State.
Idris noted that a secure South-East strengthens the entire nation, emphasizing that democratic success relies on regional peace. He explained that a comprehensive security strategy requires participation from all levels of society, including government officials, traditional leaders, and the general public.
The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is prioritizing the protection of citizens by boosting intelligence sharing, providing better resources to security forces, and fostering international partnerships. The Minister added that infrastructure development and youth empowerment programs are integral parts of this broad security approach.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, represented by Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua, pledged that the National Assembly would provide the legislative framework needed to sustain peace. Similarly, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu called for a move from rhetoric to practical action, stressing that community trust and cooperation are essential.
Abia State Governor Alex Otti remarked that progress is impossible in an environment dominated by fear, highlighting the need for job creation to address the root causes of unrest. General Christopher Musa, the Minister of Defence, concluded by stating that security is a shared responsibility that demands the active commitment of every Nigerian citizen.
