The Accord Party has formally requested President Bola Tinubu and Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun to address the intimidation and detention of its members leading up to the Osun State governorship election on August 15. The party is also demanding the replacement of Osun State Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Gotan, claiming he is biased and threatens the integrity of the upcoming vote.
National Chairman Maxwell Mgbudem announced on Thursday that approximately 100 party leaders and supporters have been detained, with some individuals transferred to Abuja. Mgbudem characterized these actions as politically driven efforts to undermine the party’s momentum. He stated that the party has previously reported assaults on its campaign offices and staff to local security forces, but those complaints remain unaddressed by authorities.
While urging supporters to maintain calm despite these provocations, Accord officials have reached out to the National Security Adviser and international observers to help safeguard the electoral process. The party maintains that it remains committed to a peaceful campaign and believes that the democratic process will ultimately prevail over the use of force.
