A political gathering in Ezza South, Ebonyi State, turned violent when unknown assailants attacked members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). At least 10 people sustained injuries during the event in Ikwuator Idembia, which was held to welcome former APC member Ifeanyi Nworie to the PDP. Witnesses noted that the attackers followed the crowd to a private residence after disrupting the initial rally at a village square, destroying equipment such as chairs and sound systems.
Journalists covering the event were also targeted while traveling to the venue, with reports suggesting their vehicle was nearly vandalized. PDP state chairman Chukwuma Igwe condemned the violence as an attempt to suppress democratic rights. He urged the police, DSS, and other security forces to investigate the matter and ensure political neutrality leading up to the 2027 elections.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has denied any role in the assault. Chief Stanley Okoro Emegha, the APC Ebonyi chairman, stated his party promotes peace and suggested the violence might have stemmed from internal disputes regarding Nworie’s political migration. Local authorities have yet to release an official report on the violence.
