Candidates participating in the upcoming August 15 Osun governorship election formally signed a peace agreement on Thursday. Facilitated by the National Peace Committee, the initiative seeks to prevent electoral violence across the state. Fourteen political parties participated in the signing ceremony, which was overseen by Rev. Matthew Kukah.
Former Head of State and NPC Chairman, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, emphasized that the accord represents a significant step toward inclusive and credible elections. Speaking through his representative, Gen. Martin Agwai, he urged all political actors to campaign with civility and uphold the law. He stressed that no political win is worth a loss of human life.
Rev. Kukah highlighted that the signing reflects a serious dedication to democratic norms. He called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to remain impartial and directed security services to maintain vigilance. Furthermore, religious leaders, the media, and civil society were encouraged to foster responsible public discourse.
Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu, represented by AIG Fasuba Olabode, promised comprehensive security measures and stated that police personnel are arriving from neighboring states to ensure the process remains neutral. Meanwhile, INEC representative Prof. Joash Amupitan described the agreement as a vital moral commitment.
Governor Ademola Adeleke attended the event to show his support for the peace process, citing concerns over current political tensions. The Ooni of Ile-Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, also issued a call for non-violence, urging voters to resist any form of inducement and to participate in the democratic process with integrity.
