A Kano State High Court has handed down a death sentence to Saudat Jibril for the murder of her husband, Salisu Idris. The conviction comes just nine days after the couple was wed.
Legal proceedings concluded after the court reviewed arguments from both sides. The tragic event took place in May 2025 within the Farawa area of Kumbotso Local Government. The couple had been married for little over a week when the killing occurred.
Barrister Lamido Abba Soron Dinki, representing the state, provided three witnesses to solidify the prosecution’s argument. In contrast, the defense, led by Barrister Abdulfatah Muhammad, relied solely on the testimony of Saudat Jibril.
Justice Maryam Sabo presided over the case and stated that the prosecution provided sufficient evidence to establish guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Consequently, the judge dismissed the defendant’s claims and ruled that the punishment for the crime is death by hanging. Following the verdict, correctional officers took Jibril into custody to await further legal processes.
