A sentencing hearing at Hull Crown Court has revealed the harrowing actions of former funeral director Robert Bush. The 48-year-old previously entered guilty pleas to 67 charges, including failures to conduct proper burials and cremations at Legacy Independent Funeral Directors in Hull.
During the proceedings, victims shared the devastating impact of his deception. Jasmine Beverley recounted her horror upon learning that the remains of her stillborn son, Sunny-Beverley Conlin, had been left in a paper bag on the floor of the funeral home for nearly two years. She had previously been led to believe she had collected his ashes in a small blue coffin.
Other families described similar trauma. Lucy Ness testified that she was handed an urn filled with wadding and bone fragments rather than her child’s ashes. Meanwhile, the family of 80-year-old Jim Porter discovered his remains at the facility with hospital identification tags still attached to his body. Prosecutors detailed how 35 bodies and over 100 sets of ashes were recovered from the premises. In total, 46 families received the wrong remains, while 11 were given nothing at all.
The court heard that Bush, who had accumulated roughly £90,000 in personal debt, also defrauded 226 people of more than £550,000 through deceptive funeral plans. The investigation was triggered after industry peers alerted authorities, leading to his arrest at Heathrow Airport. Investigators described the funeral home as unkempt and discovered many bodies in various stages of decomposition, lying on racks or stretchers.
