Adidas CEO Bjorn Gulden offered an apology on Thursday regarding the overwhelming number of pink cleats appearing during the World Cup. Speaking during a quarterly earnings press conference, Gulden characterized the visual uniformity as an accidental outcome.
While acknowledging that pink is an acceptable color, Gulden admitted that it was unexpected for multiple competing brands to launch nearly identical color palettes simultaneously. He clarified that companies typically operate without insight into the specific strategies of rivals like Nike, Puma, or New Balance. He further suggested that retailers usually intervene when such overlap occurs, but no such warnings were received in this instance.
Various theories have emerged regarding the trend, ranging from the color’s high visibility against green turf to player preferences for the bold aesthetic. Odinga Nimako, a product manager at Nike, previously noted that some athletes view the color as a sign of confidence. Gulden concluded by expressing personal dissatisfaction with the situation, noting that the industry should have avoided this collective lack of variety.
