The Body of Benchers (BoB), which serves as the primary regulatory authority for the legal profession in Nigeria, has announced plans to implement strict disciplinary measures against practitioners engaging in unprofessional behavior. Specifically, the organization is targeting the practice of charge-and-bail lawyers, whose conduct they described as damaging to the reputation of the legal field.
During a recent three-day induction ceremony in Abuja, the BoB welcomed 6,010 new lawyers into the profession. HRM Albert Akpomuje, SAN, the Chairman of the Body of Benchers, addressed the crowd and attributed the current saturation of the legal market to universities that intentionally ignore student intake quotas. This over-enrollment creates a surplus of graduates that the job market cannot support, eventually leading many to resort to desperate and unprofessional legal practices to survive.
The BoB has established a committee tasked with regulating the number of individuals permitted to enter the Bar annually. By strictly enforcing these quotas, the organization aims to protect the prestige of the profession. Universities found to be exceeding their approved limits face potential sanctions, including the possible de-accreditation of their law programs.
Meanwhile, the legal community is navigating other challenges, including protests from over 4,000 National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) graduates seeking access to the Nigerian Law School. These graduates argue that their exclusion is discriminatory. Additionally, discussions surrounding the future of legal education persist, with some experts suggesting the decentralization of vocational training, while others, like the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), call for broader curriculum reforms to better adapt to modern professional demands.
