The Anambra State Government has announced plans to conduct structural integrity assessments on commercial properties across Oko and Amaokpala. This initiative is a response to the recent collapse of a three-storey structure in Amaokpala and similar incidents in the Orumba North Local Government Area.
Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr. Chijioke Ojukwu, expressed sympathy for the victims and their families while wishing the survivors a quick recovery. The ministry has already sealed the site to facilitate a detailed investigation into the collapse.
Preliminary findings suggest structural failure, allegedly ignored by management in favor of profit. The government intends to prosecute those responsible for the negligence. Furthermore, officials plan to revoke the land occupancy rights linked to the site. The state is now reviewing other buildings in the area reported to be at risk.
Mr. Ojukwu emphasized that the administration will strictly enforce building codes and safety regulations. The ministry is coordinating with agencies including SEMA, NEMA, and the police to manage the situation. Property owners are warned that violating safety standards will result in severe legal consequences. The public is advised to stay away from the site and avoid circulating unverified rumors.
