A violent confrontation between the Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JAS) and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has resulted in significant casualties on the Lake Chad Islands. This escalation has sparked new anxiety regarding the security situation in Nigeria’s North-East.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama confirmed the news, noting that the battle broke out near Mangari and Tumbun Allura. The two factions were vying for dominance over key areas within the Lake Chad basin. JAS militants emerged victorious, reportedly killing numerous ISWAP members and capturing two essential transport boats before withdrawing to their base in Kurnawa.
These boats are highly valued for moving weaponry, food, and personnel across the challenging Lake Chad environment. Following the defeat, regional intelligence indicates that Nigerian military units in locations such as Mallam Fatori, Baga, and Kukawa are on high alert. Authorities are particularly concerned that displaced ISWAP survivors may scatter into neighboring zones, leading to retaliatory strikes or the use of improvised explosive devices.
In response to the shifting landscape, military officials are planning to ramp up surveillance, reconnaissance, and patrol missions to stop the insurgents from regrouping or launching further attacks.
