Tensions have escalated within the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) after its leader, Ba Shuwa, ordered the arrest of four high-ranking Shura Council members in the Lake Chad Basin. This information was shared by security analyst Zagazola Makama via social media. The Amniyya, the group’s intelligence branch, reportedly monitored these individuals for an extended period before the detentions occurred.
The leaders were accused of consuming subversive audio content, which the ISWAP leadership claims was produced by Nigerian military psychological operations. Among those detained are influential field commander Mallam Burin, ideological cleric Babakura Wanjam, and Shura Council members Abu Huraira and Mallam Ari Kara. Their apprehension has generated significant instability and fear among the insurgents.
This move is seen as an indicator of widening cracks in the group’s hierarchy. Sources close to the situation believe Ba Shuwa is reacting to fears of internal ideological betrayal. The internal crackdown occurs while regional military forces maintain heavy pressure on ISWAP, using psychological campaigns to disrupt the group’s command and control structures.
