Residents attending the Federal Polytechnic, Oko in Anambra State have blamed private hostel managers for disregarding structural warnings leading up to the recent collapse of a three-story building in Amaokpala. Occupants allege that despite persistent reports regarding cracks and maintenance issues, building owners prioritized rent collection over necessary repairs.
Several students stated that tenants who failed to pay rent on time were often locked out of their rooms, even during critical examination periods. Concerns have now shifted toward the overall integrity of housing in both Oko and Amaokpala, with students demanding that government officials inspect local residential buildings to forestall further tragedies.
Dr. Oguegbu Celestine Udoka, the spokesperson for the polytechnic, clarified that the building is privately managed and serves non-students as well. He confirmed that the collapse happened after the academic term concluded, stating that no polytechnic students have been reported dead. The Rector, Dr. Chioma Irene Awuzie, led a delegation to the site alongside state commissioners to oversee rescue efforts. While search operations continue for two individuals believed to be trapped, authorities noted these missing persons are not students of the institution.
