Manchester City midfielder Rodri undergoes back surgery

Manchester City midfielder Rodri will face a brief layoff for rehabilitation after undergoing surgery to address ongoing back issues.

Manchester City midfielder Rodri is set to miss a brief stretch of action as he undergoes a period of rehabilitation following back surgery. The club confirmed that the player had been managing persistent discomfort before deciding to proceed with the corrective operation.

Manager Enzo Maresca noted that the athlete requires a focused break to recover properly before returning to the squad. Rodri, who arrived at Manchester City from Atletico Madrid in 2019, has recently been the subject of intense transfer speculation linking him to Real Madrid after his standout performance in Spain’s successful World Cup campaign, where he earned the player of the tournament award.

This setback adds to a difficult period for the midfielder, whose recent seasons have been hindered by physical issues. He notably missed the majority of the 2024-25 campaign due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament. With his current contract entering its final year, the club is monitoring his recovery closely as they prepare for the upcoming Community Shield match against Arsenal on August 16 and their Premier League season start against Bournemouth on August 23.
