The pan-Yoruba group Afenifere has voiced strong opposition to the modified path of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. They warn that bypassing coastal communities in Ondo State violates the project’s original intent and threatens the economic potential of the region.
In a formal letter to President Bola Tinubu, Secretary-General Sola Ebiseni argued that the 700-kilometre project was originally designed to integrate all coastal zones. Ebiseni noted that the history of this route traces back to the early 20th century when the Ilaje territory was part of the Lagos Colony. He cautioned that the current shift suggests the highway might be prioritizing private real estate interests in Lagos over broader national development.
Afenifere is calling on the President to adjust the highway design to include the Ondo coastline, specifically directing it from Lagos through Oghoye in Warri. From there, the route would connect to Edo State and continue through the remaining Niger Delta states. Ebiseni emphasized that developing the untapped Ondo coastline would provide widespread economic gains, similar to how infrastructure investments in Lagos have benefited surrounding areas in Ogun State. He urged the government to choose equitable regional growth over political convenience to ensure the project serves as a lasting national asset.
