Dennis Amachree, a retired Assistant Director at the Department of State Services, has publicly disputed journalist Tony Eluemunor’s narrative concerning the death of General Sani Abacha. Amachree labeled the journalist’s account as entirely inaccurate, specifically rejecting claims about the involvement of foreign women and the presence of apples.
This dispute follows Amachree’s public challenge to Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, the former Chief Security Officer to Abacha, to provide CCTV evidence of the military ruler’s final moments. This confrontation arose after Al-Mustapha dismissed assertions made in Amachree’s book, DSS @40: My Journey Behind the Shield. In that publication, Amachree claimed Abacha passed away due to cardiac arrest on June 8, 1998.
During an appearance on Arise News, Amachree criticized Eluemunor for fabricating details to gain attention, noting that the journalist incorrectly identified his professional timeline and hierarchy within the agency. Amachree stated that he would not disclose sensitive details from the official investigation, including the status of individuals held for questioning at the time. He dismissed the journalist’s work as mere fiction intended to appeal to the public rather than factual reporting.
